Removing stair carpet: what to expect
What happens when carpet comes off stairs, what you might find underneath, and how to prepare.
The removal steps
- Carpet and pad are cut and pulled
- Staples and tack strips are removed
- Treads, risers and nosings are inspected
- The plan is confirmed: refinish, cap or replace
Common findings
- Construction-grade treads not meant to be exposed
- Nail and staple holes
- Gaps between treads and skirt boards
- Squeaks that carpet had muffled
Peek before you plan
If you are comfortable, lift a small corner of carpet on a top or bottom step and photograph what is underneath. It helps the contractor estimate more accurately. Do not damage carpet you might keep.
