Staircase remodeling in Roswell, GA
Staircase remodeling combines several stair services into one planned project: new or refinished treads, painted or replaced risers, updated balusters, a new handrail and newel posts, and a finish that works with the surrounding floors.

Staircase remodeling referrals are available in these launch areas, subject to address confirmation:
Scope
Typically included
- Planning the full scope across treads, risers, skirt boards, railings and finish
- Combinations of tread replacement, refinishing and railing replacement
- Stain and paint coordination with adjacent flooring
- Removal and disposal of old materials the contractor replaces
Not included
- Whole-room or whole-house flooring (captured separately for routing)
- Moving a staircase or changing its footprint, which is a structural project
- Engineering, permitting decisions or code certification by this site
Structural and code-related questions (stringers, framing, rise and run, guard height, baluster spacing) need assessment by an appropriately qualified contractor. This site does not give code rulings.
Material and condition considerations
Sequence matters
Railing work, tread work and finishing affect each other. A contractor typically sets the order so new balusters are not damaged during sanding and the stain is applied to final surfaces.
Matching or contrasting floors
Stairs often meet hardwood, carpet or tile at the top and bottom. Decide early whether the stairs should match the floor, contrast with it, or bridge two different floors.
Hidden conditions
Removing carpet or old treads can reveal damaged stringers, squeaks or uneven risers. A remodel estimate may change once the stairs are opened up.
What affects the estimate
This site does not publish prices. Contractors estimate after reviewing your stairs. These are the factors that usually move the number:
- Number of flights, treads and landings
- Straight, curved, winder or open-sided layout
- Which components are replaced versus refinished
- Tread species and whether treads are solid or capped
- Railing length and baluster count
- Stain matching, paint colors and number of finish coats
- Repairs found once old material is removed
How to prepare
- Photograph the full staircase, both sides, from top and bottom
- Note what you want kept, changed or replaced
- Collect a sample or photo of the floor the stairs should match
- Plan another route between floors if the stairs will be out of use
Frequently asked questions
Is a staircase remodel different from just replacing treads?
Yes. Tread replacement is one component. A remodel usually also covers risers, railings and finish so the whole staircase is updated together.
Can I remodel the stairs without changing the railing?
Often, yes. A contractor can protect and keep an existing railing, though sanding and staining around it takes extra care.
Will I need a permit?
Permit needs depend on the scope and local rules. Cosmetic work and structural work are treated differently. Ask the contractor and the local building department rather than relying on this site.
