Cosmetic vs. structural stair problems
How to tell surface issues from problems that need a qualified structural assessment.
Usually cosmetic
- Worn or scratched finish
- Dated colors or styles
- Minor squeaks
- Small chips on nosings
Possibly structural, get it assessed
- Sagging or bouncing steps
- Cracked or split stringers
- Treads separating from risers or stringers
- A railing or newel that moves significantly
- Signs of water damage or rot
What to do
If anything feels unsafe, limit use and mention it on the estimate form. This site does not diagnose structural issues. Structural and code-related questions require assessment by an appropriately qualified contractor.

Roswell Stair Remodeling is a referral service. When you submit this form, your request is shared with a relevant independent stair contractor who reviews it and contacts you about an estimate. We do not perform the work.
- Your property address is confirmed before any promise of service.
- Estimates and pricing come from the contractor, not this site.
- Structural or code questions need the contractor's on-site assessment.
Phone requests are not available yet. Please use the form.
