Flooring questions for stair projects

How stairs relate to surrounding floors, what happens to hallway and landing flooring, and how related flooring requests are handled.

Stairs are not whole-room flooring

This site covers stair work only. Whole-room or whole-house flooring is outside its service list. If you also need floors done, say so on the form and the request is flagged for separate routing. It is not part of the stair referral.

Where stairs meet floors

  • Top nosing: the piece where the upper floor meets the first step down. It should match or transition cleanly.
  • Landings: often floored to match the treads, which is commonly part of stair scope.
  • Bottom step: meets the lower floor and may be a box or bullnose step.

Matching stairs to existing hardwood

Matching is about species, grain, board width at landings, stain color and sheen. Older floors may have aged in color. Stain samples on the actual stair wood are more reliable than color charts.

Engineered and laminate floors

If the nearby floor is engineered wood, laminate or vinyl, stair treads are often solid wood stained to coordinate, or manufacturer stair parts. Ask the contractor which approach fits your floor.

Questions

Will the stair contractor redo my hallway floor?

That is a separate flooring request. You can mention it, and it will be routed separately, but the stair referral does not include it.

Should stairs match the floor exactly?

It is a design choice. Many homes match. Others use a contrasting stair color with painted risers.
