Handrail and newel post options

Railing systems, newel styles and choices to consider when replacing handrails and posts.

Railing systems

SystemHow it worksGood to know
Post-to-postRail runs between newel postsSimpler fittings, posts are prominent
Over-the-postRail flows over post tops with fittingsContinuous look, more fittings at turns
Wall-mountedRail attached to wall with bracketsCommon for stairs between walls

Newel post choices

  • Box newels: square, often paneled
  • Turned newels: rounded profiles
  • Iron or mixed newels: paired with iron balusters

Stability

A newel post anchors the railing. Its connection to the floor and framing matters more than its style. Loose posts can need repair beneath the floor surface. A contractor assesses this.
