Guide
Preparing an occupied home for stair work
How to plan around stair work while living in the home: access, dust, drying time, pets and safety.
Before work begins
- Plan how people reach upper floors, or whether alternate steps are possible
- Clear walls, frames and decor near the stairs
- Move valuables and fragile items from the stair area
- Arrange pets and children away from the work zone
During work
- Ask about dust control and containment
- Respect finish drying times before walking on treads
- Keep ventilation as the contractor recommends for the products used
Vacant properties
Vacant homes can simplify scheduling and drying. Note on the form if the property is vacant and how access will be arranged.
