Coordinating stair stain with floors and rails

How to choose stair stain and paint colors that work with adjacent floors, handrails and risers.

Why the same stain looks different

Species, grain, age, sanding and existing finish all change how stain looks. Red oak, white oak and other species take the same stain differently, and older floors may have ambered.

Practical steps

  • Ask for stain samples on the actual stair wood
  • View samples in daylight and evening light
  • Decide whether treads match the floor or contrast
  • Choose riser color: painted risers are common with stained treads
  • Pick the sheen, since it affects appearance and slip feel
