Wood vs. iron balusters
Comparing wood and iron balusters for appearance, maintenance and what a conversion involves.
Comparison
| Factor | Wood balusters | Iron balusters |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Traditional, painted or stained | Slimmer profile, many decorative styles |
| Finish upkeep | Paint can chip and need touch-up | Powder or painted finishes, touch-up if scratched |
| Conversion work | Not applicable | Old spindles removed, holes prepared, new balusters set and secured |
| Handrail | Works with most rails | Rail must suit the baluster attachment |
Converting wood to iron
A conversion usually keeps the handrail and newels if they are sound. Each wood spindle is removed, and an iron baluster is set into the tread or shoe rail and the rail above, with a shoe covering the base. Railing safety and spacing should be confirmed by the contractor.
